50+ Athletes: 5 Fitness Fixes for 2025

Dan Taylor, MS, CSCS

Next year you want to be as happy with your strength, stamina, mobility, body composition and general athletic capacities (and injury-free or at least successfully managing them) as possible, don't you?

You're busy, so let's get right to it. Here are the things you're probably not currently consistently doing that can get you there:

  1. Seek guidance only from a limited number of sources who have the relevant educational background and decades of experience specifically in this narrow field of expertise who, themselves, also do the same for their own continued growth (there are not that many of us around). Make sure your sources are deep and reliable; not flashy and questionable (social media's strong suit).

  2. Choose a top priority in each of the two categories, training and performance-eating, to prioritize in the coming year, and stick to those areas until they are where you want them. Common examples for training are to improve strength-to-bodyweight ratio or lower body flexibility. Popular goals for performance eating in our community are to increase protein while creating a moderate daily calorie deficit or increasing veggies as a percentage of total intake.

  3. Get an objective, personalized assessment of your true starting points for your chosen priorities. It's the only way you're going to have a meaningful measurement of your progress as the year passes.

  4. Make a weekly training schedule (if you don't have a great one already) that supports your fitness goals and is successfully managing your process. That means what type of workout on which days to best reach your fitness ambition. Not sure if you can do that effectively? Email me at Team@Optwell50plus.com and I'll send you mine (with explanations).

  5. Create a written list that serves as a source for rotation of the most needed /currently under-consumed food types in your weekly eating practice. For most, that's protein and veggies. Uncertain about where to start? Email me at Team@Optwell50plus.com and I'll send you mine (with explanations).
