Sleep and Hydration: The Other “Essential Components” for Good Health

Two components critical for good health are proper hydration and sleep. Both are vital, yet so many put the importance on the back burner.

When it comes to hydration- our bodies are 50-70% water. We can go weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Water is essential many reasons, including:

· Helps our bodies get rid of waste (urine and sweat)

· Carries key nutrients to cells

· Helps control body temperature

· Aids in digestion, prevents constipation

· Helps normalize blood pressure

How much do you need? Most people are lucky if they get half of what they need in a day. Your urine should be clear or straw colored, definitely not yellow!

With sleep, again most people walk around sleep deprived. It is reported that about 40% of Americans between the ages of 40-60 yrs have trouble sleeping. Sleep is essential for keeping our body healthy, and is not something that should be skimped on. Aim for 7-9 hrs each night. Try and stay on a sleep schedule 7 days a week. Try and find a way to prioritize sleep, not only will you wake up on the right side of the bed, your family, friends and your own body will thank you!
